Appotronics released its third-quarter report for 2026 on 30 October. Third-quarter revenue was CNY 249 million and research and development expenditure was CNY 50.53 million. Revenue for the first nine months was CNY 726 million, with research and development expenditure of CNY 169 million.
During the reporting period, the company continued integrating its internally developed upstream core components with existing operations and increasing investment in its upstream industrial ecosystem.
Adjusting the business mix
In cinema, a stronger selection of summer releases supported a recovery in domestic box-office activity. Its subsidiary, China Film Appotronics, had introduced the GeniLaser™ light-source range using Appotronics’ own lasers. The company describes these sources as retaining ALPD® characteristics including inherently speckle-free output, stable light output and a long operating life for cinema customers.
In professional displays, the company delivered cultural, tourism and immersive-experience projects including the Shenzhen Natural History Museum and a large tourism resort town. During the second quarter, it launched AIMapper, its first AIGC-based 3D projection-mapping software, intended to simplify content creation and commissioning and shorten the setup cycle for projection projects.
The company also actively adjusted its business mix. In response to macroeconomic conditions, stronger competition and its assessment of automotive optics, it reduced the scale of that activity. In consumer products, it sought to improve management, control expenses and costs, and concentrate the intelligent-projection portfolio on higher-quality laser mini-projectors suited to consumer demand, reducing the consumer business’s effect on overall profitability.
Alongside these adjustments, Appotronics has been working to commercialise the results of its upstream core-component development, improve supply security and strengthen coordination across its industrial activities.
Investment in optical interconnects
A development with longer-term implications concerns optical interconnects. Appotronics has appeared in reports identifying investors in the optical-chip company Weijiu Optoelectronics.
Weijiu describes itself as one of a limited number of Chinese Micro LED companies with in-house epitaxy and a complete volume-production process. It identifies two areas of differentiation. The first is integration of epitaxy and chip production through equipment modification and independently optimised etching and deposition, supporting stable manufacture of materials and chips. The second is extending optical-chip capabilities beyond displays into applications such as visible-light communication, using Micro LED chips’ fast modulation and low power consumption to develop another growth opportunity.
The report presents Appotronics’ appearance among these investors as consistent with its upstream strategy. Such investment could extend the company’s role from display optics towards the infrastructure used to connect future computing systems.
